We believe you have read part 1 of this article and have seen some of the unhealthy ways we use social media and some negative implications of this. If you have not read the Part 1 of Unhealthy use of social media, we recommend you do so as this is a summary of the 2 previous posts on the topic. Here, we also summarise the suggested solutions that can help put you on a path to a healthier use of social media.
As a brief reminder, some of the identified negative implications of using social media unhealthily include:
Information about your family and personal life being easily/freely accessible, depression, CCC Syndrome, reduced level of concentration, chatting to a predator or jail bait, location tracking, contamination of mindset, low self-esteem, mind programming (and these are just a few). Do you know any more side effects? Go on and add them in the comments section.
Now to the tips on how to use social media in a healthier and more secure manner
Avoid posting pictures of your home entrance, pictures of you in your school uniform, pictures showing your school or work ID card, pictures showing information inside your passport etc. Also, if possible, avoid: tagging your family members in pictures (except you are all public figures).
Use features like Screen time to track how much time you spend on Social Media. You can set alarms of 10 minutes to track the time you spend on socials. You can have a fixed break time to check your socials every day but you need to ensure you do not spend more than the time you have allocated!
A blue tick does not necessarily mean ‘wisdom’ or ‘common sense’. Just because they are a celebrity or an ‘influencer’, does not make their advice the best or the most sensible. In the same way, we should not always consider whatever they do or post on social media as the necessary standard of living, the standard of dressing, the standard of speaking, etc. You are far more intelligent and high value than some of your favourite “celebrities”.
Do not compare yourself and your achievements to someone else’s. Your only worthy comparison is yourself and that is comparing yourself of yesterday with yourself today and if you feel like you should be way past where you are today, put in the work. Everything works out in due time if only you are patient enough to put in the work. Be careful not to be in a hurry. Shortcuts can cut your life short!
We believe adopting, and sticking to any of the techniques mentioned here would put you on a path to a healthier use of social media. Any other suggestions? Please share in the comments section.
